Get it right this Valentine’s day: Flower and gift guide

  • February 10, 2011 at 5:38 pm

The services of online florists have made it increasingly easy to send flowers at any time of year and during February many people’s minds will be on red roses as a romantic Valentine’s Day gift. Flowers make wonderful presents to celebrate other occasions but deciding which flowers to send can be tricky.

When someone you know is celebrating an engagement, a new baby, a birthday or an anniversary, the first thought that springs to mind might be to send flowers. By learning a little bit about the history and cultural connotations of various flowers, we can make sure we send the right flowers for every occasion.

When it comes to choosing simple, uncomplicated tributes with flowers uk florists often recommend lilies. If you are seeking to brighten up someone’s life after a difficult time, or express sentiments of happiness and affection, the lily is an elegant choice. Lilies are commonly exchanged between family members, so if you are looking for a bouquet to send on Mother’s Day, a family birthday or after the loss of a family member, look for a lily.

During springtime, flowers appear in abundance and there are always plenty of good reasons to give them as gifts at this time of year. At Easter, daffodils are given as a symbol of new life and regeneration. This association makes daffodils a great choice of gift to celebrate a new baby.

Evergreen plants and winter flowers make great gifts at Christmas time. If you can’t be with your family at Christmas, the option to send flowers makes for a surprising, original present. Mistletoe is a classic Christmas flower, while holly, pine and red berries make great additions to Christmas trimmings and decorations.

Tulips make wonderful presents all year round. Elegant, shapely and brightly coloured, tulips are amongst the flowers uk residents have warmed to most over the years, making these Persian beauties an integral part of Easter celebrations and a central feature of many British gardens. The tulip can be given at birthdays or special occasions as a symbol of love, without the romantic connotations of the red rose.

Few people think of flowers when buying gifts for men. But there are a number of flowers whose styles, colours and symbolism appeal strongly to a more masculine market. Gerbera daisies and Stargazer lilies, for example, with their large blooms and vibrant colours, are associated with connotations of honour and aspiration.

If you wish to send flowers on a special occasion but are still unsure of the most appropriate choice, you could ask your local florist for advice or, if you are feeling brave, just go with your instincts. Despite all the history and cultural associations, flowers can still mean whatever you want them to.

If you need a flower delivery London has some great flower shops providing all sorts of flower bouquets gifts for any occasion including weddings, birthdays, anniversary gifts and funeral flowers.

www.antelopevalleyflorist.com 888.948.6006 Saint Valentine’s Day (commonly shortened to Valentine’s Day)[1][2][3] is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.[1][3] The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as “valentines”). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

      • March 28, 2010 at 7:12 am

Flowers are sometimes used for the final touches to a home. The way you display your flowers can characterize the image of your home.

The orchid is a very distinctive flower, it really is delicate, elegant and considered very stylish. For these reasons an individual orchid will surely have additional effect on a space than a large arrangement of other flowers.

So how should you best decorate a room with orchids?

Below are the three most common ways of show your orchid flower arrangements.

      1. Traditional flower arrangements. Until recently these were the most typical ways of displaying flowers. They were either arranged using an oasis to carry each flower in play, or they have been arranged in a vase having a neck that was tight enough to hold the stems as the arranger wanted without slippage. This is a lovely way to present flowers, but the orchid can seem slightly out of place or simply lost within these more elaborate displays.

      2. Single stem vases. These became extremely trendy in recent years. The vases differ in height, so think about the room and also the placement of the vases till you make your mind up which to buy. If you are looking to place them on top of a table, you need them tall enough and narrow enough that they do not prevent the view of the other diners. Just as you don’t want them so tall that they are not valued. For anyone who is considering having them lower, then it’s worth paying for a vase with a weighty bottom to make certain that the orchid flower arrangement is steady and not easily knocked over.

      3. Pot plants. If you intend to always have orchid flower arrangements in that case you may be better of getting orchid plants. With a little care and attention these will last well. Rather than setting out and buying the first orchid you see , reflect on where you want to leave them. Orchids love the sunshine, however they do not like direct sunlight. Sunlight can burn an orchids petals and they will before long lose the attraction that initially attracted you to them. As orchids don’t need much water, they are fairly contented in small pots, this means that they can still be a fitting table ornament.

      Valentines Day in History

      • February 9, 2010 at 10:02 am

The number and variety of stories and tales concerning the origin of Valentine\’s Day will make your head spin. Some say it began as a feast or festival in ancient Rome. Others say it\’s based on one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine. The idea of romantic love being associated with Valentines Day came much later, possibly from Chaucer in the era of courtly love. Here are a few of the more interesting tales.

Lupercalia was an ancient Roman, or possibly pre-Roman festival celebrated every year to honor Lupercus, the god of fertility. It was originally a shepherd festival local to the area around Rome. It survived into Christian times and was abolished by Pope Gelasius near end of the 5th century.

Another story concerns the reign of Emperor Claudius II. This Emperor needed soldiers to fight wars and believed men failed to join his army because they didn\’t want to leave their wives and families. So Claudius outlawed marriages and engagements. A priest named Valentine continued to marry couples. Valentine was discovered and put to death. Afterwards he was named a Saint.

A poem written by Charles the Duke of Orleans is considered the oldest valentine still in existence. Charles wrote the poem to his wife when imprisoned in the Tower of London. This document is part of the collection of the British Library in London England.

In much of South America, Love and Friendship day is quite popular and celebrated on February 14th. While it\’s somewhat similar to the U.S. celebration, people also perform acts of appreciation for their friends. In Brazil, however, June 12th is Boyfriends/Girlfriends day. Couples exchange gifts, chocolates, cards and flower bouquets.

Valentine traditions in Denmark and Norway are less commercial and more personal than in the West. Valentine\’s Day is called Valentinsdag and is still celebrated on Feb 14th. Traditions include having a romantic dinner or sending a rose or a card to a loved one.

Valentine\’s Day in Iran is still celebrated in spite of some government restrictions. The celebration is called Sepandarmazgan and is celebrated on February 17th. The tradition is becoming more common among younger Iranian girls and boys.

Valentine\’s Day cards were first mass produced in Worchester, Massachusetts. Esther Howland, daughter of the owner of a book and stationary store was inspired by an English valentine she received. The popularity of St. Valentine\’s Day increased rapidly shortly thereafter.

Valentine\’s Day traditions in Western culture call for expressions of love symbolized by cards and gifts. The older tradition of giving Valentines Day cards has been slowly expanded to gifts of all kinds over the past several decades. Traditional gifts include flowers, especially roses, and chocolates, often in a heart-shaped box.

Speaking of Love – Don\’t Forget Flowers for Valentine\’s Day

      • February 8, 2010 at 7:36 am

Think about having an intimate conversation with a loved one. Would it be possible to have that conversation without speaking or writing? Suppose you found someone you\’d like to know better. How could you develop that relationship without speaking or writing?

That was the situation in Victorian England for much of the 1800\’s. Due to the strict social etiquette of the time, extreme discretion was required. Conversations of a romantic nature were strictly off-limits. But emotional expression cannot be denied for long. Symbolism and meaning became attached to everyday objects and gestures, and especially to flowers.

Specific meanings were given to every variety and color of flower. As a result, a bouquet of flowers could become a secret message. In addition, the way the flowers were presented, the way they were accepted also added special meanings. Many of the secret messages were romantic, but some were rejections and some were even insults. Complete conversations could be carried on using only flowers.

Tussie-mussies, small bouquets of flowers, became very popular. Using the language of flowers, Victorians developed secret messages that declared their intentions, issued rejections, and made acceptances. Emotions that were forbidden in speech or writing could now be expressed in flowers.

As the symbolism grew more complex, many details of the secret codes were written down. Eventually dictionaries and even books were written to clarify the meanings and to help people better create and understand the messages.

Before the Victorians, other cultures used flowers to express emotions. In ancient times cultures like the Greeks and Persians gave their own meanings to flowers. The Japanese too, created their own flower language. The exact meanings of the flowers and colors change over time to fit the needs of the culture but the use of flowers to express emotions continues to this day.

Many cultures had elaborate and lengthy courtship rituals. The giving and receiving of flowers was often an important part of the process. Those practices led to the prominent place of flowers in our modern culture. Valentines Day, Mothers Day, and Easter, among others, simply wouldn\’t be the same celebrations without flowers and plants.

Although we don\’t use flowers in quite the same way as the Victorians, we still use flowers to express our emotions. For Valentine\’s Day this year, rather than sending a simple message, such as \”I love you\” with roses, think about using a hidden message with a bouquet of mixed flowers. Search online for \”language of flowers\” to jump start your ideas. Don\’t forget to add a note to explain the hidden message. Remember to order Valentine flowers in advance for a timely delivery.
