Trailer Talk – Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark

  • June 22, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Release date: August 26.

The cast: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison, Jack Thompson.

The pitch: Guillermo del Toro masterminds another assault on the senses based on the 1973 telefilm which del Toro once described as ‘the scariest TV production ever made.’

The buzz: the vast majority of horror reboots and aspirant franchises in the last few years have been decidedly sub par. Nightmare on Elm Street, Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine: the genre has not so much reinvented itself as taken a major step backward.

Reasons this could be good: While the idea of a first-time director heading up hot film property might be enough to scare even the most ardent horror fanatics, there’s no reason to panic. sure, Troy Nixey might not have a sparkling film pedigree, but his reputation in comic book circles is fearsome. and with del Toro by his side, he could be in worse hands.

Reasons this could be bad: three words – Computer Generated Images. the film can all too quickly take a turn from psychological horror to complete farce. please don’t let this be another I am Legend.

The verdict: the end result might not end up being the classic del Toro we all crave, but hopefully enough of his creative genius will rub off on Nixey to buck the trend of substandard Horror reboots.

Best bit: 0.28-0.32 – Guy Pearce dons his best shirt and sweater combination to show the world that he’s ready for his long awaited role in Desperate Housewives.
