An edible storm in a cupcake

Ever wonder why most terms of endearment are typical dessert names: cupcake, honeybun, cookie, pudding, pie?! Homemade cupcakes bring back that warm fuzzy feeling of girlhood pleasures replete with pigtails, hot cocoa and warm cookies. the heady aroma of baking, melted butter and choco sprinkles, takes you back to a time when hip endowment and its progressive expanse was indifferent to the dangerously delicious repast one ‘partook’.

The innocuous little cupcake is now serious business in the city. Bengaluru has gone one up and ushered in the Cupcake era in place of the done-to-death mithai and chocolates. once the forte of larger confectioners and patisseries, Cupcakedom has struck a vibrant chord with young mums-turned-entrepreneurs who organically had loved to box out the goodies for school snacks, put out a motley fare over chai with the neighbour or simply comply with frequent requests. not only a huge success at kiddy and kitty parties, it’s a must have dessert option at most corporate dos, christenings, Xmas and Diwali, valentine gifts and for general indulgence.

Eye candy and palate pleaser, the little bites of heaven are crowned and garnished with exclusive imported French butter, Philadelphia cream cheese, German Hintz cocoa, insists Karishma Chandani of Cookies. Her workshop at home is a confectioner’s delight where the Nutella Ganache and Oreo cream cheese varieties seem to find homes directly off the cooling rack. “My absolute favourite the Red Velvet cupcake has a velvety cream cheese frosting so sinful, it screams come and Get Me!” she beams about her bite-sized minis going for Rs 30, regulars at Rs 80 and the sugarcrafted ones for an extra Rs 20.

Cupcakeree’s Reethika Singh admits “Popular requests? Chocolate of course! People never seem to tire of it. though I do wish they would be more adventurous and try the fruity, nutty confections too.” she turns out her signature Ooey Gooey Surprise of molten chocolate and marshmallows while her Kahlua or Grand Marnier with Chocolate are absolute winners at Tea parties or as festive giveaways.Stocking up on all her flavourings, extracts, sprinkles and fondant from her trips to the US, Reethika pronounces grandly, ‘Its all about the Filling’.

The cake/filling/frosted treats are a dozen to a case against orders with the mini to maxi ranging between Rs 35 a piece to Rs 70 while toppings in 2 or 3D will up the rate by Rs 25 going all the way upto Rs 175 for her dolled-up Jumbo cupcake orders. Sugar Cube is undoubtedly cupcake paradise. Sumeet Saigal Gambhir, the proud mama of the four-year-old outfit, feels taking the customised homemade cupcake trend into the professional arena has been a big step.

“I ventured into the cupcake business when there were no players. Today the market is teeming with new entrants and interesting ideas. the market is big enough for everyone to grow. But the ones that will stay on track will never compromise on quality, a balance of the product looking right and tasting right. “Details like colour used, fat content, flavouring and other ingredients play a key role. Customers can tell when they’re getting value for money, even if you’re significantly higher priced and they keep coming back for more!” quips Sumeet.

Make no mistake, we do eat with our eyes. Her vanilla and chocolate varieties adorned with ducks, birds, bees and other delectable fauna in a myriad of colours are a hit with the kids and fly off the racks effortlessly. While adults have room to play around with love messages, naughty sentiments, on the beautifully crafted pieces with exotic sugarcraft details. Priced at `80 upwards per cupcake — for a minimum order of a dozen — Sugar Cube is here to stay.
