Defiance Community Cultural Council’s 2010-11 performance series kicks off Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Defiance Arts and Media Center with classical guitarist Javier Calderón.

“We are very excited about our new schedule, which includes 10 events,” said Andrew Schultz, DCCC artistic and performance series director. “There are many great artists, each unique in their own way, and it’s all made possible by the wonderful community support.”

The schedule is comprised of the Sam Hornish Jr. “Bands, Bands, Bands!” series (Thursday evenings) and the Moats Enterprises “Sunday at the Center” series.

Series memberships are $35 each for five concerts and individual tickets at the door are $10 per event. in addition, individual pre-sale tickets for the “Bands, Bands, Bands!” series only will be available two weeks prior to each concert for $8 each at Defiance Development and Visitors Bureau, Defiance Public Library and Kissner’s.

“Our ticket prices are the same as when we started,” said Schultz. “We have been able to keep them low due to the tremendous support from sponsors and individual patrons. our season ticket sales to date are actually higher than last year at this time.”

Calderón, a Bolivian native, has been praised for creating “the unique bond that sometimes occurs between an audience and a solo performer.” he has performed with prestigious orchestras and soloists, and featured on PBS and in international media.

“He is very exciting to listen to and I’m certain he will be a big hit with the audience,” said Schultz. “This should be wonderful Sunday evening concert to kick off our new season.”

The first “Bands, Bands, Bands!” concert, slated for Sept. 15 at 8:15 p.m. in Schomburg Auditorium, will feature “Hotlanta,” a six-piece Dixieland jazz band.

“DCCC is teaming up with Defiance College and its Schomburg Series for this event,” said Schultz. “It will be held on campus at Schomburg on the Thursday of the college’s homecoming week activities.”

Hotlanta has been described as “a trip to new Orleans without the hangover.” the band’s repertoire is wide, ranging from Dixieland classics such as “When the Saints Go Marching In” to jazz favorites like Duke Ellington standards.

“They will present a unique concert set which includes a list of audience favorites for the entire second half of the show,” said Schultz.

The remaining four “Bands, Bands, Bands!” events will be held at the historic former Valentine Theater in downtown Defiance, beginning with “The Bob Rex Trio” on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

“Bob is a city native who began his music career as a percussionist in the Defiance school music program,” said Schultz. “He has been entertaining audiences at various jazz venues in the Toledo area for more than 30 years. we look forward to welcoming Bob back to his hometown.”

The saxophone quartet “Sax 4th Avenue” will perform on Jan. 12, followed by local favorite Big Band Sound of the DCCB on Feb. 2. the final concert in “Bands, Bands, Bands!” will be presented on March 29 by Axiom Brass, a quintet hailing from the Music Institute of Chicago.

“Sax 4th Avenue also has a local connection in Kevin Heidbreder, one of the quartet’s members, who is an assistant instrumental music teacher for Defiance City Schools,” said Schultz. “They played here previously as featured ensemble for the DCCB spring cabaret concert in 2010.”

Added Schultz: “The Big Band Sound is a very talented group of area musicians who have drawn quite a following over the past few years. They are always a crowd-pleaser. Scott Rogers does a great job as their director.”

Following the Calderón concert, the Moats Enterprises “Sunday at the Center” series continues with duo sopranos Laura Hynes Smith and Audrey Luna on Oct. 2. together they comprise “Détour de force,” which has performed everything from opera to cabaret music in prestigious venues throughout the world.

“This concert represents the first vocalists we have featured as a premier group,” said Schultz. “These two sopranos will be awesome.”

“The Forgotten Saxophone,” with sopranino saxophonist Dr. Farrell Vernon, will perform on Nov. 13. Vernon will play this seldom-heard instrument with ensemble members Dr. Melanie Bookout on viola da gamba, Irene Atro on piano and professor Laura Lydy on classical guitar.

This ensemble is comprised of members of the music faculty of Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne,” said Schultz. “The sopranino is the highest-pitched member of the saxophone family.”

The “Sunday at the Center” series concludes with “Duo Diorama” on Feb. 12 and pianist Warren Mailley-Smith on March 25.

“Duo Diorama is a violin-piano duo with an eclectic mix of musical styles,” said Schultz. “Mailley-Smith is a rising young British talent who has performed for the British royal family and has been enthusiastically received throughout the world.”

In addition to season tickets for $35 for each series, additional sponsorship gifts are being accepted at this time as follows: friends, from $15 to $25; silver sponsors, $26 to $50; gold sponsors, $51 to $124; and platinum sponsor, $125 and up.

Ticket requests or sponsorships, with checks included, should be mailed prior to Sept. 11 to DCCC, P.O. Box 294, Defiance 43512.

“These two series are outstanding examples of the quality of entertainment and cultural events available here in Defiance,” said Schultz. “At a price much lower than we would pay in a larger city, area concertgoers can enjoy music in a variety of styles by outstanding performers.

“We hope that more and more people will come out this year to attend these exciting events.”
