Flowers trail in Father’s Day shopping bonanza Lisa Onland Friday, June 17, 2011 Saying thank you to mom with flowers is fine but for dad it’s an entirely different ball game – and, of course, a lot more expensive.

with Father’s Day just around the corner, retailers and restaurants are gearing up for what they hope will be a bonanza in wine, food and, possibly, electronic gear sales.

“Father’s Day is definitely nothing compared to Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, when flower sales are much better,” says Kenneth Anguish of Fleur Hong Kong.

his flower business has received around 25 to 30 orders for the unofficial holiday on Sunday and he expects them to peak at about 45.

“Food or fruit baskets are more popular for the men, which usually come with a bottle of wine or Godiva chocolate,” Anguish said.

ADVERTISEMENT While small, the number of flower orders for Father’s Day has increased from previous years. Many such orders will be delivered to recipient’s offices.

Anguish believes those fathers who receive flowers enjoy the opportunity to “show off” their children’s gifts to their friends and colleagues.

if flowers are not dad’s thing, a host of restaurants have put together Father’s Day-themed dining packages to lure families over the weekend.

The Peninsula Hotel is giving every father celebrating at The Verandah and Gaddi’s a gift certificate from The Peninsula Spa, while Harbour Plaza is throwing in a complimentary photography service coupon to diners at its Hoi Yat Heen Chinese restaurant and Greens Cafe tomorrow and on Sunday.

of course, taking dad out for a bit of retail therapy is another option, one the Hong Kong commercial sector is banking on.

Irene so Kit-lin, general manager of Sino Group retail marketing, said sales of up to HK$11 million are expected at the company’s Olympian City mall.

“Overall the economy is strong and people are willing to spend. We are expecting heavy traffic,” she said.

However, so also agreed that Father’s Day is not as big a pull commercially as Mother’s Day.

“Definitely, children are more generous when saying thank you to mom,” she said.
