She listened—silence, except for the wash of water around the piers supporting the old boathouse. Her arms ached, but yanking the chains as hard as she could didn’t budge the U-bolts that kept her spread-eagled against the wooden plank wall. The cuffs on her ankles had dug into her skin, bloodying her feet. “Somebody help me!” she yelled. No answer. A single light bulb dangled from a wire slung from the middle rafter, casting deep and distorted shadows from the objects around the room—the slats of crab cages, lengths of thick rope, floaters and netting hanging from the cavernous ceiling, the spokes of her wheels and handlebars against the opposite wall. Why did he bring me here? He must be a psycho. “Oh God please, somebody help me,” she whimpered. She took another breath and screamed. Her throat hurt from yelling. He wants to kill me. I know it. I could see it in his eyes. But where’d he go? Concentrating, she slowed her breathing and listened. Footsteps
