Lake Ridge Middle honors deployed service members

LAKE RIDGE, VA. – American service members deployed overseas are never far from the hearts and minds of the students in Laura Grieco’s sixth-grade class at Lake Ridge Middle School.

For the past seven years, Grieco’s students have written letters, made Four Leaf Clovers for St. Patrick’s Day, eggs for Easter, and book markers with flags for Flag Day, and sent them to those serving far from home as a way to let them know they are not forgotten.

“Many of our heroes are husbands and sons of the faculty,” explained Grieco, whose classroom is adorned with thank-you plaques from service members who have received the mementoes.

One of Grieco’s students, Helen, said it makes her feel good inside to participate in the “our Heroes” project.

“I like the Christmas ornaments we made for them during the holiday and it was fun to make the gifts and write the cards,” she said.

The students have also sent the service members generic “how are you doing cards.”

“we, in the past have had other classes help us,” added Grieco.

For Valentine’s Day this year, the students made over 1,000 “Miles of Smiles” hearts that were sent to wounded service members here in the United States.

“I like to write and ask them questions,” explained Brianna.

Grieco’s students have also received two flags – one that flew over the first school to be rebuilt in the Middle East that girls could attend. the other was flown in the window of his Blackhawk helicopter on Sept. 11.

“I felt like I was making a difference and wrote cards in Spanish,” said Katherine of her participation in the project.

A binder on display in Grieco’s classroom is filled with thank-you notes to the class written by service members.

“I felt like I did something right,” added Savion.
