Patriotic Service is June 26 at Riverside Baptist; more south Mobile County news from Jo Anne McKnight

A Community Patriotic Service is planned for Sunday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at Riverside Baptist Church, 3130 Dauphin Island Parkway. the pastors and churches of the Dauphin Island Parkway Ministerial Association present the annual service. the program for the evening is primarily music, including congregational singing, a community choir and selections from various singing groups. Those who wish to participate in the community choir should meet at the church at 4:45 p.m. on June 26.

The offerings received during the community service are needed to continue to supply the food pantry sponsored by the DIP Ministerial Association; the pantry is open each Friday morning at Fulton Road Baptist Church, 1800 Dauphin Island Parkway, and supplies groceries to needy families in the 36605 ZIP code area. the community is encouraged to attend this annual patriotic service.

Something new has been added in Grand Bay leading up to the Watermelon Festival on July 4: A Grand Summer Fair will begin June 30 on the grounds near the ball park at Festival Park on Taylor Harper Boulevard.Festival coordinator Marie Mathis said the fair will kick off with a ribbon-cutting and opening ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Activities consist primarily of carnival rides. Immediately after the opening ceremony, the Baker High School Dance Team will perform.the gates to the Summer Fair will open on July 1 at 3:30 p.m.; on July 2 and 3 at 2 p.m.; and on July 4 at 8 a.m. Reach Mathis at 251-367-8646 for information.the annual Grand Bay Watermelon Festival, a family fun day sponsored by the Grand Bay Odd Fellows, is July 4 beginning at 8 a.m. Admission is $5 per vehicle. Among the many activities that make this a day not to be missed are, first, all the free ice cold watermelon one can eat and second, a nice, shady spot under the oaks to indulge one’s taste for the fruit.there will be food booths, various vendors and arts and crafts. There’ll be music, too, with one singing group being Chapter II from the Dauphin Island Parkway area. There’s a Pretty Baby Contest for little ones ages 0-3 years; registration is at 9 a.m. at the Odd Fellows Lodge. the Watermelon Queen and her court will be announced. And there’s a competition to see who’s grown the biggest watermelon (even children have a biggest watermelon contest), a race to see who can eat the most watermelon and a seed-spitting competition.

Grand Bay Convalescent Home, 13750 Highway 90 West, will celebrate July Fourth with a bang, according to activities director Diane Johnson. the annual fireworks display, free and open to everyone, will begin on the front lawn of the facility at 8 p.m. on July 4. Those attending will receive a cold drink to keep them cool, but should bring a lawn chair or a blanket for comfortable seating to view the fireworks.

Senior news

A few months ago, the senior citizens at Grand Bay-St. Elmo Senior Center published “Grand Bay Gourmet Cooking: A Collection of Recipes by Grand Bay Senior Center.” the cookbook contains some of the treasured recipes of the current participants at the center, a good enough reason in itself to purchase the $12 book.But it also has a history of Grand Bay, telling of its establishment in December of 1870 and its growth up to the present date. Grand Bay resident Taylor Harper provided the historical information.in addition, the cookbook holds a wealth of information about herbs and spices; hints for baking breads and desserts; the art of napkin folding; a chart of measurements, substitutions and equivalency quantities; a calorie counter; and definitions of cooking terms.the cover painting is by Iris Trovaioli with the cover design by Aleta Boudreaux. Earl Adams and Adelia Rosales edited the text.Published to help fund the seniors’ activities, the book is available at the Senior Center, 11610 Highway 90 West in Grand Bay; at several Grand Bay businesses; and at the Grand Bay Welcome Center. the cost is $12 if picked up at the center. It may also be ordered by calling 251-865-4010 — just add $5 for shipping and handling.

On June 29, there’s an Open House and Indoor Picnic for the community at Grand Bay-St. Elmo Community and Senior Center. Refreshments will be served from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

At the library

On June 28 at 2 p.m., the 2B Ranch Wild West Show Cowboys Around the World will be at Theodore Oaks Branch of Mobile Public Library, 5808 Hwy. 90, Suite E. that show will be at Parkway Branch, 19241 Dauphin Island Parkway on June 29 at 3 p.m.

Bayou La Batre Public Library Summer Reading Program is on June 28 from 10 to 11:30 a. m. in addition to fun activities, crafts and a snack during the program, each child will receive a book to take home.

School news

Judson College equine student Jordyn Blackwell of Grand Bay will serve as an intern this summer in Wylie, Texas, at the Equest Physical Therapy and Rehab Center. she will complete the work to earn certification in the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. Blackwell, the daughter of the Kenneth Blackwells of Grand Bay, will return to Judson for her final semester in the fall.

The Alma Bryant High School Student Government Association of 2010-11 worked very hard to surpass their American Cancer Society Relay for Life goal of raising $30,000, said Bryant news coordinator Cindy Sweets. For Relay and other worthy causes, they sponsored dozens of unique monthly fundraising activities through the year, including sending Halloween “Boo” grams; participating in Pie the Teacher and the Iron Bowl Spirit Rally; selling Valentine’s “Crush” drinks; and selling sun/moon cutouts and luminaries for honoring and remembering those with cancer. They held “Stand Up to Cancer” T-shirt days. They sponsored blood drives and purchased gifts for 20 Christmas Angels from local elementary schools.the culminating activity was the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life community event hosted at Bryant on may 6. “Bryant SGA members demonstrate strong leadership skills and these students are often members of other service, academic, creative/artistic and sports organizations in school and their communities,” said Sweets.

Faculty sponsor was Jamie Bosarge.
