Day #3 – Be My Valentine

  • September 19, 2011 at 10:10 am

Sometimes, where you end up is exactly where you should be.

We started our trip with one plan in mind, but that plan (which was to get up early in the morning and drive to Wall, SD as fast as possible in a land yacht that doesn’t go super fast) was causing stress and anxiety.  If there’s anything we are learning right now in life, it’s that life is too short to feel pushed around by your own vacation.  So….we changed the plan.  Instead of driving the nine hours to Wall, we instead drove five hours a different direction to…are you ready?… Valentine, Nebraska.  Tomorrow, we’ll go another three hours to Wall and then we’ll be back on track.  Unless we decide that plan isn’t gonna work…then we’ll make a new one.

Something I am learning with a disease like ALS, is that you have to play the hand you’re dealt.  and it’s not just the hand of the disease, it’s the hand of the day.  some days are strong, some days are not.  That’s okay.  We just take it as it is without worrying about what isn’t. It’s a really good lesson for me and it’s a good vacation strategy for even the most healthy and hearty, so feel free to take it as your own.

One of the great things about this trip, has been the chance to see Steve’s awesome family in Nebraska.

Here’s Steve and his dad, Paul.  two great men of faith right there.

We hit the road, going West toward adventure.  and you know what we found?

A lot of this.

Grass and fields and corn and fields of grass and corn.  That’s mostly what our trip was like.  but we had a lot of fun.  and just before we landed at our campsite in Valentine, we found a Wildlife Refuge.

Josiah looked and looked for wildlife, and spotted a pelican…and also, I’m pretty sure my hair counts as wildlife:

After a long(ish) day on the road, and a lovely dinner, we relaxed with some Apple Cake that Tess had made (after many long minutes learning out how to use the RV oven…we are getting SO smart, you guys – you won’t even recognize us when you see us next!)

And one more thing…

If I live to be a million (and I think I might, if I take enough relaxing vacations) I will never get tired of looking at this picture:

Thanks, Valentine, you’ve been great!
