Guitar Gear Review: Eventide Space The Perfection Of Sound – The TMR Zoo

  • September 10, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Eventide continues to shock and surprise me. The latest addition to their stompbox line is the Eventide Space – Reverb and Beyond. Reverb is one of the earliest and simplest guitar effects but is still o’ so understood. The book Audiology defines reverb as ” the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is removed”.

When I think of reverb, I think of Paul Horn. Paul Horn is a new age flute god that traveled the world looking for locations with the most beautiful natural reverbs and echoes. If you listen closely to his recordings “inside the Taj Mahal I & II” you can hear his flute paint a sonic picture of the inside of the mausoleum.

As the flute bounces off the walls and ceilings and through the chambers of this great building the original note is answered by a congregate of echoed tones and reverbs. Horn puts the listener inside the hallowed halls of the Taj Mahal with his flute. Now image that beauty in a box.

Most reverb stomps or even racks are single tap effects. You produce a tone and you get one tone back . Eventide Space is a multi-tap reverb unit. This allows you to paint the many chambers of the Taj Mahal and more.

The presets range from gentile true 1960′s Fender spring reverb to trippy heady delays with lush modulation. This is not your daddy’s reverb and what is built into your amp can’t come near this pedal. The settings Shimmer and ModEchoVerb allowed me to play crystal-like shimmering jazz chords. When I switched to the Fishman piezo pickup in my Parker Guitar a tear came to my eye.

The guitar sounded so crisp clean and full. The sustain seem to go on forever. The reverb enveloped the room in a way that made me feel like I was sitting inside an acoustic guitar. Loud, crisp clean, deep, rich and clear.

Space features 12 of Eventide’s signature reverb combination effects culled from the H8000FW and Eclipse V4 along with some startling new magic. Space includes 100 presets, including presets crafted by Flood and Alan Moulder (The Killers, nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, 30 Seconds to Mars, PJ Harvey and Them crooked Vultures), Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, nine Inch Nails), Richard Devine (sound designer, synthesist, performer, remixer), Vernon Reid (Living Colour), Amedeo Pace (Blonde Redhead), Alex Somers and Jonsi Birgisson (Jonsi and Alex, Sigur Ros), Amadeo Pace (Blonde Redhead) and John Agnello (Patti Smith, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., and Kurt Vile).

These unique effects, previously available only in Eventide rack processors, are now available in a compact, roadworthy package. never before has there been a more dazzling collection of reverb algorithms combined with delays, pitch shifting, tremolo, modulation, and spatial effects in such a compact and affordable package. Eventide stompboxes are available at your favorite authorized Eventide dealer.

The polar opposite for me when thinking of the perfect reverb tones is Led Zeppelin’s whole Lot Of Love from “The Song Remains the Same”. The cavernous natural reverb of the Madison Square Garden mixed with a Maestro Echoplex, it doesn’t get better than that.

Being a rocker at heart I had to give the Eventide Space a roll in the mud. I paired the Spring reverb with my Fuzzface and cranked my Marshall. I haven’t had this much fun in years. I ended up playing some of the volume swell riffs from Alex Lifeson’s lead on Rush’s La Via Strangiato. I was transformed. The tone is so deep and full, imagine throwing a Marshall into the Grand Canyon and hearing the sound fade away.

The Reverse setting brought me right back to Jimmy Page. I cleaned up my tone and came pretty damn close to duplicating the reverse reverbs on The Yardbird’s Ten Little Indians. I popped on my Fuzzface again and instant Hendrix. Stepping away from the classic rock genre there are also a ton of cutting edge modern tones in this box. I even found myself playing a bit of country with the TremoloVerb.

This delay has so many applications in and outside of the guitar world. Keyboardists, bass players vocalist and live or studio engineers can get so much from this box. Eventide Space has a street price of $499.00. This is modest seeing you are getting a lot of the processing power of the Eventide H8000FW ($5,495 street price) and  Eventide Eclipse V4 ($1,995 street price) at a fraction of the cost.

My challenge is – go to your music store and try this stompbox out. make sure you bring $499.00 with you because once you play through this box there is no way you are leaving the music store without it.

So if reverb is “the persistence of sound in a particular space after the original sound is removed”. I am going to build on that and say Eventide Space creates the perfection of sound after the original sound is removed.

What are good valentine day gifts apart from the usual flowers?

  • September 10, 2011 at 11:30 am

I did the chocolate thing last year, the usual flowers, also the teddy bear, and the usual cards, did the dinner; however, this year I am kind of stuck.

Lingerie & candles and rose petals in a bathtub

I would say, dress up nicely, go to a fancy, romantic resteraunt. maybe do the whole flowers, and candy, teddy bear thing, maybe go for a walk on the beach, if you're near one, or write a romantic song, if you can sing. write, or play guitar.

Dress up really sexy, give her a card with yo true feeling in it from the heart that u wrote in, cook for her and get some movies u both enjoy. Don't forget the chocolate whether u gave it to her last year or not(if she eat chocolate). we love our candy.

his the link to my questions "need help finding a gift for your love ones??"

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;…

pick out something she loves to do! it doesn't matter if you did it before, its the thought that counts……plus you dont have to get her a bunch of stuff to make her feel loved! show her you love her by doing something you both enjoy…

** plan something for valentine's night, and a good gift idea is maybe a spa giftcard ……just so she can take a day to relax! everygirl loves the spa!!

hope this helps…and dont worry to much, you'll figure it out!

Hi well some musical cards you can find them at Walgreen's.

What are your Valentine's Day traditions in your family?

Do you get your children gifts for Valentine's Day? What are you getting your SO? What would you like from your SO?

Last year we did a Valentine's Card scavenger hunt. It's kind of like an Easter Egg hunt, but it's for little Valentine's Day cards. a box is what, $2? I put little treats in each one, a sticker or some red/pink M&Ms. He loved it. I'm planning on doing the same this year.

The only actual tradition we have here is that my husband and I get a bubble bath together. Everything else, just depends on whether I want to be lazy and buy cookies or bake for example.

That's cute! What a great idea!

I actually quite dislike the idea of Valentines Day (maybe that's because I don't have a SO and t makes me jealous to see others all romantic lol) I just think that we should show our love everyday and not expect it on a certain day…

I do get my daughter little gifts and she has a party at school so we will probably bake something special.

We eat a lot of heart shaped food and do crafts. my husband and I do not exchange gifts, but the kids always get something.

YOU are my hero. I've been struggling with what to do with Luke. We've made a big deal of making chocolate lolly pops for his little daycare friends and we're taking little cards for him to give out with them…but I was stumped on what to do for him at home.

That sounds like just the cutest thing.

As far as family traditions….Valentine cards for everyone, my hubby always gets me roses and we always go to "our" restaurant for dinner…but with the economy the way it is…it seems wasteful to me to drop $250 bucks like that.

I'd be happy with two hours alone with him…no kids…no tv….

ive never really given valentines day much thought. even with a SO, it never really mattered. guess i never had anyone who ever made it special for me. i have been thinking about doing something for my kids though. just a card and maybe a thing of candy for each of them. make a big deal to them, i think they will get a kick outta it. plus they deserve something a little extra special.

We always get the kids a small box of candy and a gift each. This year we're getting them gift cards and putting them in the candy box. I'm biting my tongue and buying my SO the rod and reel he wants. It's a little more than I think a fishing pole should cost, but I broke his other one last year (accidentally). I have no idea what he's getting me. I don't really have a wishlist, just as long as it isn't chocolate and roses.

Scavenger hung is a great idea, our family loves them!

We usually do a LOT of baking, a lot! my kids and I go around visiting all our friends and family at work dropping off a ton of goodies for them:) the kid love going around giving everyone treats and eating them as well, lol. we get our kids chocolate and homemade cards, this year we are adding a gift certificate to a child's cooking class for them. my husband normally gets me a good bottle of wine or tequila and margarita mix, lol, along with a spa gift certificate. I get him a certificate for a message and porn:) we also do some other stuff I'm not going to mention on here:)

I love Valentine's day, even when I'm single I like it. It's fun. Sure it's commercialised, but it's still an excuse to celebrate and spoil my loved ones, and let them know they're loved and appreciated, so I love it.

I always get my daughter a box filled with little things. This year since she's reading, on every little item, I'm writing her a note with something I love and appreciate about her on it. Candies, usually a dress or an outfit for spring, art supplies, books. This year I got it all done early and my brother's bringing it when he joins my daughter and I next week on our vacation, along with gifts from our friends for her. of all our friends I'm the only one who has a kid, so they kind of take it upon themselves to spoil her and make things for her all the time and send her all kinds of gifts at any and every holiday. I'm sure she'll be overloaded again.

I am dating someone, I haven't really thought about him =/ Bad girlfriend, I know. I'll send him some stuff from Canada and some chocolate.

I make up small boxes for my younger siblings and brother too. It's so much fun to put thought into sending a nice little package with the message of appreciation.

We don't really have a v-day tradition.
This year my girls are giving my grandma, my mom and a few of my aunts a v-day photo card and a dove chocolate rose. might become a tradition.

Last year, I took em to build a bear. I just received 2 v-day books that I bought them, hehe one is "Roses are Pink, your Feet really Stink" so they will each be getting a book and bag with goodies.

Scavenger hunt sounds fun..

We always make valentines crafts to decorate the house, and make cards for eachother. we try to go for a walk on the beach and look for sea glass. I made chicken fetticini alfredo for dinner and we make a mini cake.

I love your idea, we might do that now too :)

I get little gifts and cards for the kids. Husband and I don't do much, our anniversary is February 1.
but enough about me…

I just basically want to say that I love your valentine scavenger hunt idea , and hope you don't mind if I copy-cat it this year !!!!!!!!!!!!

That's an awesome idea :) .

For Valentine's Day, my daughter's will be going to see my mother (she is single and will enjoy the time with her grandkids) and my boyfriend and I will be going out to dinner and then a local rock concert that is playing. I'm getting him a stuffed animal and a box of chocolate. I think Valentine's Day is pretty much all about soft toys, chocolate and cheesy gifts.

What are your Valentine's Day traditions in your family?

Happy Father's Day, dads

  • June 23, 2011 at 4:48 am

It's Father's Day, and for our family this Father's Day is a tough one. This will be our first Father's Day without My one & Only's father. Dad Hutson died last February, one week after his 98th birthday.Dad had dementia. at first, it was a short-term memory issue. Although he remembered the past vividly, he couldn't remember what he'd had for lunch. After his wife's death, he had a hard time remembering anything or anyone — and that included members of his family. And that was tough going for all of us. We had his physical presence, but the Jack we knew had left us. I remember My O&O coming home from a visit to the home where Dad spent his last years. With tears in his eyes, he said, "the father I knew is dead." that was the point at which the man I love began the long, slow mourning process.then, the inevitable occurred: Dad's physical body gave out. And the sweet, smiling old man we loved crossed the barrier between life and death and went to spend eternity with his Lord and the woman he loved.you would have thought that his passing would have been easier because we had what Nancy Reagan described as "the long goodbye." Dad didn't know us. He didn't remember us. While he enjoyed the company of others for a few minutes, it didn't matter if that company was family or perfect strangers. But long goodbyes, as anyone who has ever experienced them knows, are no easier on those left behind than sudden passings. yes, the opportunities to express love, to give thanks, and even to forgive and make peace are there during long goodbyes. But the loving, the missing, the regretting, and the memories remain no matter the method of leave-taking.And so we mourn. And in our mourning we remember. My O&O remembers the father he grew up with, the father he shared a profession with, the father he made proud. the grandkids remember a grandpa who took them on boat rides and made them laugh. And I remember the man who welcomed me into his family 43 years ago, despite my dumping an entire pot of scalding hot coffee onto his lap at a Big Boy restaurant the weekend My O&O brought me home to meet his parents.yes, Father's Days are for remembering, and not a Father's Day passes that I don't remember my dad who died over a decade ago. I remember a father who bought corsages for my mother, my sister and me to wear to church on Easter Sunday. I remember heart-shaped candy boxes on Valentine's Day. I remember his walking me down the aisle. I remember his walking our crying sons until they quieted. He had a knack for that. I remember his long, long stories. the ones we had heard many times before.I remember my dad every time I look at the pictures of Texas Bluebonnets that hang in our house. one is a small photo. the other is a painting that was done by a woman who lived in his retirement community. He brought it all the way from Texas to give it to me. It is a mediocre painting at best, and it cost me a fortune to have it framed. It hangs among the really good paintings that we've accumulated over the years. And of the art work we own, it is a piece that means the most to me. It was a gift of love, and one of the last gifts he gave me.And so on this Father's Day, I remember fathers who are gone, but I also give thanks for the fathers that surround me. My one & Only, who is a role model — except for changing diapers and getting up in the middle of the night — to our sons on what a father should be. To our firstborn son who as the father of two sons is an incredible father. He does change diapers and get up in the middle of the night. On this Father's Day, we remember and we give thanks for fathers and their incredibly important roles in our lives.Kathryn Hutson is a Troy resident and freelance writer.
