“Three Musicians” is New CD from Pianist/Arranger Joan Stiles, Featuring Joel Frahm & Matt Wilson

  • October 22, 2011 at 8:30 am

Joan Stiles

Pianist Joan Stiles’s first two CDs&#151Love Call (Zoho, 2004) and Hurly-Burly (Oo-Bla-Dee, 2007)&#151showcased Stiles the resourceful and inventive arranger for octet and sextet. Her new album, Three Musicians, on which Stiles arranges for an unusual trio with saxophonist Joel Frahm and drummer Matt Wilson, reveals the pianist as a fearless improviser who combines harmonic gifts and rhythmic acuity with a pleasingly sharp sense of humor. the album is due for Oct. 25 release on her Oo-Bla-Dee label.Three Musicians is a consistently inspired recording that finds Stiles and company letting loose on a wide range of modern-minded material with both serious musicianship and ardent playfulness. and the absence of a bassist allows the leader’s piano to cover not only the low-end notes that are normal bass territory but also the regular harmonic and melodic responsibilities that one expects from a pianist.each track on Three Musicians&#151whose title is drawn from the similarly-named Pablo Picasso Cubist masterpiece and whose cover boasts a remarkable Picasso homage-collage by Stiles herself&#151brings its own special reward. “In the Sunshine of my funny Valentine’s Love” is a beguiling blend of Cream’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and Richard Rodgers’s “my funny Valentine” with a Bach fugue in there as well. another inspired medley pairs the Depression-era standard “Brother, Can you Spare a Dime?” with the Beatles’ “Can’t Buy me Love.”For powerhouse swing, there’s Stiles’s Gillespie/Dameron-inspired “Bebopicity,” Mary Lou Williams’s minor blues “O.W.” (she’s been championing Williams’s music for over a decade), and Stiles’s odd-meter romp, “West End Boogie” (“Never want to lose that blues and swing,” she says of her work). On the quieter side, the trio presents Leonard Bernstein’s “Lucky to be Me” and Billy Strayhorn’s poignant “Blood Count.”The album also includes “Everything’s Coming up Roses” (from Stephen Sondheim and Jule Styne’s Gypsy); Jerome Kern’s “all the things you Are”; and two Thelonious Monk compositions, “Nutty” and “Introspection.”Throughout, Frahm and Wilson prove to be the perfect partners, interacting with creative fire as they mix and match with the leader and bring her conceptions to life.“Matt and Joel have a tremendous sense of openness and sensitivity,” says Stiles. “They really know how to listen and if one of us starts changing it up, next thing you know we’re in a different groove. They play with attention to dynamics and color and are extremely intuitive.”The journey that led Stiles to Three Musicians started in Brooklyn, where she was born and raised. She gravitated to the piano in her grandmother’s apartment, picking out TV commercial themes by ear; in her teens she performed as a singer/songwriter and rock keyboardist. Classical studies were next, followed by jazz, which was her focus when she earned an M.M. degree in 1986 from the Manhattan School of Music, where she now teaches.Love Call, her ambitious debut CD, was a top 10 JazzWeek airplay staple as was her second recording, Hurly-Burly. In 2008 she was honored with an hour-long profile on WBGO’s “Jazz from the Archives,” and last year she joined the esteemed roster of pianists who have appeared on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz show.Stiles’s vital work has found plenty of admirers, among them the superlative pianist/composer/singer Dave Frishberg. “She writes and plays brilliantly, with great respect for melody and clarity,” he has said. “She is an authentic original.”Doug Ramsey has extolled her sense of “adventure, daring, exuberance and wit” and Ted Panken, in his four-star down Beat review of Hurly-Burly, wrote that “Joan Stiles possesses the chops, craft, imagination, wit and sophistication to be mentioned in a conversation with the most distinguished descendants of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Mary Lou Williams.” Three Musicians is sure to enhance her growing reputation as a pianist, composer/arranger, and leader of note.Joan Stiles will be presenting a CD release show with Donny McCaslin (Joel Frahm will be in Europe) and Matt Wilson on Monday 12/5 at the Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, new York. On Wednesday 11/16, Stiles will also appear at the Upper West Side Apple Store, 1981 Broadway (bet. 66th and 67th Sts.), to talk about and play selections from the new album in a live duo performance with violinist Sara Caswell.

Homemade Romantic Valentines Day Gifts

  • October 22, 2011 at 6:10 am

Romantic Valentines Day Gifts can take many shapes and forms. a traditional valentines gift idea is homemade valentines day gifts. Homemade valentines conjure up a Red Heart cut out of construction paper. The homemade valentine gifts I’m talking about are unique valentines gifts that express the true connection and love between you and your Love.

A good place to start to create homemade valentines is in the kitchen. Nothing says I love you like a fresh batch of decorated cupcakes, cookies or a heart shaped cake. But I was thinking of starting earlier in the kitchen on Valentines Day, a homemade romantic valentine day gift idea would be to get up early and fix your Love a special breakfast, fortunately Valentine’s Day this year is on Sunday so you won’t need to get up as early. anyone can make a breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast but why not give a personalized valentine day gift with heart shaped eggs and an I love you message burned into the toast. just do a simple Google search to find what you need to personalize your homemade Valentine breakfast.

Another homemade valentines day gift idea that starts in the kitchen would be to plan a romantic, intimate picnic for two. I know valentines Day is in February and its cold in many places. But does it get any more romantic than to have to snuggle up with each other to keep warm as you enjoy this romantic valentine gift; besides including a thermos of warm beverage will help keep you warm. just think of the romantic memories this homemade valentines day gift will create.

Now lets think outside the kitchen. Unique valentines gifts could include creating your own romantic valentines day gift basket. if your Love enjoys spa time at home go to your bath and body shop (extra points for finding a local store that creates its own bath and body products) and pick out products with scents you know your Love will enjoy. besides bath and body pick out accessories such as loofahs, eye masks, a blow up heart shaped bath pillow. Don’t forget the candles to help set the mood. your next stop is a craft store. Browse through the basket selection and find one that will hold the products you selected. also, make sure the container you pick will make a nice decoration to accent your loves home and remain as a romantic memory of Valentine’s Day, 2010. also, while at the craft store, pick out some red shred to embellish your gift basket with. also, you should be able to fine some cello that you can put over your gift basket and shrink with a hair dryer to seal all your goodies in place. also, pick up some ribbon or raffia to tie on the finished basket. one word of cause when creating valentine’s day gift baskets, if you are making a spa basket with scented products, don’t be tempted to include chocolate because the chocolate will pick up the scent and taste funny.

Besides the Kitchen and creating a spa basket another way to create homemade Valentines Day gifts is to use tech. Create a special personalized Valentine Day gift by using photos of you and your love and create a Valentines card. Or you could use those special photos and create a memorable romantic Flikr showcase or put those photos on a new digital picture frame. Included some slides of words expressing your love and devotion.

Do a simple Google search to find other ideas for creating homemade valentines gifts. by taking the time to create unique valentines gifts you can guarantee that your Love will receive Romantic Valentines Day Gifts.

Future of debit card rewards

  • October 22, 2011 at 5:10 am

Debit Cards » The Future Of Debit Card Rewards

While some big banks, such as Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase, have eliminated debit card rewards programs now that they earn less on debit purchases, other financial institutions are looking for new ways to engage their customers.

To that end, a combination of new technology and the new world of financial reform may bring something many consumers have sought: personalized debit card rewards for their expenditures.

“Companies are going away from the one-size-fits-all model of rewarding customers to a targeted approach that will mean you will get a different offer from your neighbor depending on your transaction history,” says Alan Goldstein, managing director of ALG Partnership Marketing in Marietta, Ga. “For instance, while I might get a discount coupon for Victoria’s Secret around Valentine’s Day, my wife would get them all the time since she is more likely to shop there regularly.”

Chuck Christianson, group vice president of sales and strategy for Affinion Loyalty Group in Richmond, Va., says his company has designed an “engagement platform” to build customer loyalty to specific banks. Affinion is working with Bank of America to provide benefits to customers such as identity-theft insurance, product protection and luggage insurance that could be handled directly through the bank’s website.

“The benefits offered are personalized with a tool that gets smarter the more a customer uses it,” Christianson says. “The tool knows what customers click on and how long they look at an offer.” The tool allows benefits and debit card rewards programs to concentrate on individual consumers based on a combination of demographics, Web searches and spending patterns of the customers.

Christianson says personalization is happening now in small pockets, but he expects the trend to expand as financial institutions begin to use new technology.

Goldstein says any time a company can offer a personalized, relevant benefit, it can build customer loyalty.

“Some financial institutions are offering merchant-funded rewards programs so that, for example, if you use your debit card at McDonald’s, you’ll get a 10 percent discount immediately,” Goldstein says.

Dan O’Malley, CEO of PerkStreet Financial in Wilmington, Del., says banks that know their customers’ interests through transaction history and social media can help them shape their rewards programs.

“A tremendous number of our customers follow us on Facebook and Twitter and read our blog, and they give us feedback there, too. for example, at back-to-school time we asked them what stores they would like to see as part of our debit rewards program, and they requested Staples and the Apple Store,” he says.

PerkStreet customers earn 2 percent cash back for the first three months of using their debit cards for non-PIN transactions and then 1 percent cash back thereafter. if their balance is more than $5,000, customers earn 2 percent cash back on an unlimited number of non-PIN purchases. in addition, the bank offers Power Perks, which allow customers to earn 5 percent cash back with rotating categories and retailers.

“In the summer, we had one customer use Power Perks at a home improvement store to finish his deck, and then he used the cash back to buy all his Christmas gifts that year,” O’Malley says.

At Ally Financial, customers earn cash rebates or Ally Perks, by making purchases — with and without a PIN — with their debit card at a specific retailer. Ally used its Facebook page to request recommendations from its customers for merchants they would like to see included in the program. some of the retailers that have offered Ally Perks include 1-800-Flowers.com, iTunes, PetSmart online and Omaha Steaks online.

“We rotate the merchants every two to four weeks with different offers, which range from 10 percent to more than 50 percent back as a cash rebate that is automatically deposited in the customer’s account,” says Beth Coggins, spokeswoman for Ally Financial in Detroit.

PerkStreet has been letting its customers select their own categories for earning extra debit card rewards by participating in surveys and making recommendations through social media.

“Recently our customers have requested and received Power Perks from old Navy, movie theaters, amusement parks, ice cream stores and online bookstores like Chegg.com,” O’Malley says. “On the redemption side, they can just keep the cash, or they can use it for prepaid credit cards to use anyplace or on gift cards for a variety of retailers.”

Goldstein says banks also are tailoring benefits such as travel insurance or purchase protection plans for their debit card customers, giving them a list of services from which to choose.

“Financial institutions want their customers to go to daily deals offers, shop within their website and use their travel booking site, so they are likely to give you targeted rewards for using their sites,” Christianson says.

Bank of America offers its Add It Up program to bank customers who use its website for purchases. Customers sign up for free and then shop through the site to earn cash-back rebates from more than 350 retailers when they make the purchase with a Bank of America debit card or credit card. The rebates are automatically deposited in a designated Bank of America account.

Some bank customers may be wary of receiving personalized offers based on their financial transactions, but Christianson says, “Financial institutions are far more protective of your privacy than the typical online entity. (Consumers’) data is more likely to be compromised when they do a Google search than it is when they use a bank site.”

Party Rock is Here to Stay: Legacy Continued with Wallpaper.

  • October 22, 2011 at 4:30 am

Rap group Wallpaper. will be going on tour with Gym Class Heroes and the Dirty Heads at the end of this month. the tour will be stopping at the House of Blues in downtown Cleveland on Oct. 31, just in time for an overly indulgent Halloween bash.

Wallpaper. is fronted by the self-described “sleazy” and “sassy” Rickey Reed, supported by two live drummers and female artist Novena Carmel. “Wallpaper. is really big and loud, and sort of a party machine,” Reed boasts to those that have never heard of his musical outlet. “We put on bright, crazy shows… the records are really bass-heavy.”

“Michael Jackson, Tupac, and the Bay Area rap dudes, like E-40 [are big influences],” says Reed. “I’m also into current stuff in California, like Odd Future.” Reed enjoys mashing up artists, something he has gotten quite a reputation for using experience as a producer and DJ to master. Featured in Pitchfork for his insane sax remix of Das Racist’s “Pizza Hut & Taco Bell,” Reed brings the high-energy performance required of a live DJ to his shows. He also has been noted for a mash-up of Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and “D.O.A” in popular media outlets.

“I can’t wait!” Reed replied when asked about the tour with Gym Class Heroes. “The best thing about tour is free sodas every night, and you get to catch up on breaking bands. But it’s not only that; Wallpaper. is designed to be a touring unit. We’re at our best when we play live. [On tour, we] eat all kinds of delicious foods in different cities. I’m looking forward to getting outside of California for a bit.”

Wallpaper. released their sophomore EP #STUPiDFACEDD in July to satisfy eager fans. “The response has been sweet,” Reed admits. “We hadn’t put out an album since 2009.” Wallpaper.’s first release was entitled DooDoo Face, a mix of original songs that quickly got the Bay Area rap scene buzzing. the songs on the last record were more “funk-oriented: like P-Funk, afrobeats, and blue-eyed soul.” Says Reed of the new record, “[It] is so freaking futuristic and bass heavy! It’s so different.”

and Reed puts on a show that doesn’t disappoint. Even though “party rock” seems to be here to stay (thanks, LMFAO), there are certain things Reed makes sure to provide for his fans so that he can continue to live in the spotlight. “Fans can expect synchronized dance moves and acrobatics,” he says. “They can expect to get laid if they’re over 18. It’ll feel like a big living room house party, where you don’t know anyone, but by the end you’re all good friends.”

Wallpaper.’s current tour with Gym Class Heroes will wrap up around Thanksgiving, so Reed plans on going home to California to eat some cranberries. After that, Wallpaper. will be traveling to the UK to write and produce songs in London for the next record. “I’m sure we’ll be back on the road before February to maybe do a Valentine’s/sweethearts tour,” says Reed. “There are a few more videos rolling out, and some collaborations with some of my favorite artists that I can’t mention yet.”

when asked if Reed could rewind to when he was first starting out as a musician, back to the Future-style, he said he would tell himself, “‘Dude, there’s no future in rap metal,’ first and foremost. […] I’d tell myself to practice more and don’t write songs, and send them to your high school girlfriend immediately. Wait.”

It’s hard to keep at the top of your game, but Wallpaper. seems to be taking it in stride. “In regards to haters, I say, ‘whatever,” Reed says proudly. “They can go play Mariokart, and I’ll keep making records. To people who doubt me: educators, my extended family – I think it upsets me more when people I know personally think I won’t overcome obstacles. It’s like, “F*** you.”

Valentine’s Day – Candy and Flowers and Jewelry, Oh My

  • October 22, 2011 at 3:50 am

Valentine’s Day is the one day each year that’s designated as the day to say I love you with both words and gifts. there are many who think of Valentine’s Day as just another commercial opportunity – a day for which florists, candy makers and jewelry stores are very grateful – but I prefer to think of Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to tell the people I love just how much I love them.

When we think of Valentine’s Day we picture 3 things. candy, flowers and jewelry. because those are the traditional gifts associated with this special day. but knowing which one to buy each of the special people in your life can sometimes be a daunting task. Here are some tips to help you choose the right gift for each person on your gift list.

It’s expected that there will be more than $1,590,000 spent on heart-shaped boxes of candy for Valentine’s Day this year. there will likely be over 36 million total boxes of candy sold. but candy isn’t a good gift for everyone.

Before choosing a gift of candy you need to make sure the person you’re buying for isn’t allergic to chocolate, watching their weight or diabetic. Other than those three rules, and the off-chance that they don’t like candy, candy is a fairly universal gift for most people on your gift list.

But candy is only ranked number two on the list of Valentine’s Day gifts, just behind roses. While candy alone is a good gift for your children, parents or grandparents, when you’re buying a gift for the special man or woman in your life, you need a little more than just candy. :)

The red rose is the traditional choice of flower for Valentine’s Day gift-giving, but roses come in many colors, and each one symbolizes a different type of affection.

Red roses show love and passion so you would want to give those to the love of your life, not someone who you’re just getting to know.

Yellow or pink roses are the perfect gift of love for your parents or grandparents. Yellow roses symbolize warmth and happiness and pink roses symbolize grace and elegance.

White roses stand for purity and innocence so they are the perfect flower to send to the young girls in your life, such as a daughter or niece.

Different types of roses also mean different things. A bouquet of petite roses symbolizes affection. Petite roses are also known as sweetheart roses. A single long-stemmed rose says thank you or good job.

Valentine’s Day jewelry is heart-shaped because a heart is the universal symbol of love, so again, this is a gift you would normally give the very special person in your life. You might choose a heart-shaped pendant, heart-shaped earrings, or a bracelet or ring featuring hearts. there might be precious or semi-precious stones included in the jewelry. the value of Valentine’s Day jewelry isn’t so much monetary as sentimental. (It really IS the thought that counts here)

Rubies are the traditional stone for Valentine’s Day for the simple reason that they are red in color. of course, diamonds are always a wonderful choice of precious stone for the one you love because diamonds are forever.

If you plan to buy a gift of jewelry, the most important thing you need to know is your love’s taste in jewelry. the best way to know what she likes is to take notice of what she buys for herself and what she wears. being able to choose a piece of jewelry that will please her tells her that you care enough to have noticed.

Whatever gifts you choose for the special people in your life, do take the opportunity offered on Valentine’s Day to tell them just how much you care with gifts chosen especially for them.

Pupil lifts lid on school affair after classroom ban

  • October 22, 2011 at 3:30 am

A teenage pupil whose affair with a high school teacher led him to be suspended for two years has broken her silence about the relationship.

The girl, a former pupil at Cathays High School in Cardiff, said teacher Peter Andrew Carless showered her with gifts and took her on three overnight breaks over 18 months.

Mr Carless was suspended from teaching for two years after a misconduct hearing decided he had taken a Year 12 student to a plush hotel for a Valentine’s Day getaway – an allegation he strongly denied.

After the hearing, the student said they had enjoyed three trips together and Mr Carless had even taken her to a family wedding in Ireland and on day trips to cities around the UK.

He also bought her gifts that included a laptop during the course of their secret liaison.

Mr Carless, 28, was banned from the classroom for two years after a General Teaching Council for Wales professional conduct committee ruled that he had an “inappropriate relationship” with the female student.

The disgraced former IT teacher, from Bargoed, Caerphilly, had denied whisking the A-level student away for a romantic Valentine’s Day break at the Hilton Hotel in Tewkesbury.

He admitted spending the night of February 14, 2008, in the secluded four-star getaway – set in 140 acres of parkland and boasting an 18-hole championship golf course and spa – but said he had stayed with an art student from Gloucester he had met earlier the same day.

The panel decided his explanation was “implausible” and handed him a two-year suspension from teaching.

The girl, now 20, – who we have agreed not to name to protect her anonymity – claims Mr Carless bought her a CD and gave her a Christmas card with his phone number inside at the end of term in December 2006.

The 20-year-old, was referred to only as Pupil a during last Monday’s day-long hearing.

She said the relationship began through an accidental exchange of text messages after she mistakenly sent him a text intended for a friend.

And she claimed their conversation stepped up a notch when she was drinking with friends after their end-of-year school prom in July 2007.

“I was texting him as somebody to talk to,” she said.

“I said ‘I’ve got a soft spot for you’ and he responded saying ‘I’m hard for you’ or something along those lines.”

Later in the summer the couple, she claims, went on their first date, to Ebbw Vale owl sanctuary.

“From there it was just random meets, constant texts and phone calls right until we started back to school.”

After the relationship allegedly briefly broke down, in December after Mr Carless objected to the close relationship between her and her female best friend.

The couple rekindled their fling weeks later, it was rekindled and she said the contact between them was “constant”, including e-mails, texts, phone calls and instant messenger conversations.

“Even when he was still in school he would text,” she said.

The pair had each other’s mobile phone numbers saved under false names in order to avoid suspicion.

But they had to keep their meetings clandestine, and away from Cardiff, to avoid bumping into anyone they knew.

“we used to go to places like Newport, Cwmbran, Ebbw Vale, Swansea, Bristol, Cheltenham and Birmingham.

“we went there because of the pure fact of people from school seeing us.

“a lot of the meetings needed to be at night because of school. He used to pick me up from where I was living, drive me to random places then drop me home late at night.”

And she claimed he used to lavish gifts on her.

“He bought me a laptop. He bought me clothes and shoes, little bits and bobs here and there, CDs.”

Phil Ciaramitaro and Community Initiatives, his non-profit organization, hosted a music concert and talent show at Susana Park on Saturday, and Ciaramitaro reported Monday he was pleased with the turnout.

“It couldn’t have landed on a better September day at one of the prime parks in Martinez. A lot of

new faces were to be seen … excited parents and most importantly, some terrific young talent,” Ciaramitaro said.

Ruby Songster won first place in the youth category with her rendition of “Somewhere over the Rainbow;” Carol Stewart took first place in the adult category with a vocal and guitar solo and the Pleasanton/Dublin-based teen band Justify took the first place prize in the best band division.

Other winners in the youth category were Kimberly Misenhimer for her violin solo and Samantha Misenhimer for her rousing guitar solo. Nick Jessup, Richard Keyes and Georgia Kokolios were runner-ups.

In the Solo/Duet category Brian Wilson and Megan Young to second prize for their vocal/guitar duet and Gernee Rufus took third for a shakin’ dance routine.

Judges Ron Coveno, Dee Wood and Roy Jeans also awarded prizes in the band category to Brave Ulysses and Life Before Death.

Danny White of Good Stuff Guitar Shop donated the sound equipment and Tom Martin volunteered as soundman. Dee Wood led the Martinez Community Chorus through a few numbers, followed by the Diablo Regional Concert Band, led by Cora Martens.

Classical-guitar-man-about-town Doug Wendt performed, as did Tracy Durden, a.k.a. Flutopia, who gave the audience a primer on a variety of flutes and their specific uses.

“The partnership with the Vets at the Veterans Memorial Building is a positive step for both organizations,” said Ciaramitaro. “Community Initiatives has committed to hosting fundraising projects through the next year to fund the renovations that are much needed in the historic building – such as electrical upgrading, air conditioning, enlarging the hall, building a new stage and modernizing the bathrooms. Doing so will give the hall new life and provide a first class venue for most any private or public event or activity.”

Ciaramitaro provided a run-down of upcoming events hosted at the Veterans Memorial Building Martinez on Ward Street: October 29 Halloween Dance; November 24 Family Thanksgiving Dinner; a Christmas Dinner on December 10 to benefit the Early Childhood Center of Martinez; a new Year’s Eve Dance Party on December 31 and the popular annual “Be my Valentine” Dance on February 11.

All proceeds will benefit the Veterans Memorial Building Renovation Fund and the Fourth Annual Fall Music Festival planned for next September.

Ciaramitaro said, “much thanks goes to the vets and all of the folks who helped make the Third Annual Fall Music Festival a great success.”
